Textbooks are confident: the thylacine, better known as the Tasmanian tiger, died out in 1936 when the last captive animal collapsed in a Hobart zoo enclosure, alone and unrecorded. Clean, sad, final. Except the evidence for that ending is a lot messier than the plaque makes it sound.
