For decades, all scientists had of Deinocheirus was a pair of eight-foot-long arms tipped with menacing claws – and that was enough to fuel nightmares. Discovered in Mongolia in 1965, those arms alone were used to imagine a towering, ferocious predator, possibly a giant relative of the raptors.

Nanotyrannus was marketed for years as a scrappy, fast, miniature cousin of Tyrannosaurus rex – a distinct predator in its own right. Dracorex hogwartsia – literally named after Harry Potter’s school – and its spiky cousin Stygimoloch were once celebrated as two distinct, flat-headed and thorny-domed dinosaurs roaming Cretaceous North America. Both were flashy, media-friendly discoveries in the early 2000s, complete with dramatic names evoking dragons and demons.

Paleontologist Jack Horner and colleagues later proposed something wilder: both animals were simply growth stages of Pachycephalosaurus. As these dome-headed dinosaurs aged, their skull ornamentation was thought to change dramatically, starting flat and spiky in youth and thickening into a solid dome in adulthood. If the theory holds, museums spent years displaying juvenile and subadult Pachycephalosaurus under two entirely separate dragon-and-demon-themed names. Millions of visitors admired a towering long-necked skeleton for most of the 20th century without realizing they were staring at a head that didn’t belong to the body. When Apatosaurus skeletons were first mounted, their actual skulls were missing, so museums improvised.

Experts initially believed the skull of Apatosaurus resembled that of Camarasaurus – a misconception so ingrained that several mounted skeletons were displayed with Camarasaurus skulls for decades. Researchers eventually reasoned that a very different, more Diplodocus-like skull found near an Apatosaurus skeleton decades earlier was likely the correct one, and a subsequent discovery of a still-connected skull and neck proved them right. The proper skull was finally mounted more than seven decades after the original skeleton’s discovery, forcing multiple major institutions to quietly swap heads on their flagship exhibits. Few paleontology blunders are as visually absurd as this one: for a short but mortifying period, the world’s leading expert reconstructed a marine reptile completely backward. In 1868, Edward Drinker Cope incorrectly restored the type specimen of Elasmosaurus platyurus by placing the skull at the end of the animal’s tail, an error that haunted him the rest of his career.

Cope had never assembled a plesiosaur before and assumed the large number of vertebrae mostly belonged in the tail, resulting in a reconstruction with a long tail and short neck – when in reality, the animal had one of the longest necks of any creature that ever lived. The error was embarrassing enough that after realizing the mistake, all copies of the preprint were recalled and reprinted with a corrected reconstruction. The rivalry surrounding the mistake became legendary in paleontology circles, immortalized as a symbol of how competitive, rushed science can go spectacularly wrong. For decades, one of the most famous dinosaurs on Earth was displayed with a weapon on completely the wrong part of its body. The peculiar false thumb of Iguanodon was originally thought to sit on the dinosaur’s nose, since when Gideon Mantell first described the animal in 1825, it seemed reasonable that a conical, bony spike corresponded to the same structure on the snouts of rhinoceros iguanas.

Life-sized Victorian statues built for London’s Crystal Palace Gardens immortalized this “nose-horned” version, cementing the mistake in the public imagination for a generation. The correction came from an extraordinary discovery: twenty years after the statues were built, new skeleton finds showed the bones placed as a horn on the nose were actually thumb spikes, probably used for defense against predators. If you grew up believing Brontosaurus was real, you were technically wrong for most of the 20th century – and so was almost every museum on Earth. In 1903, paleontologist Elmer Riggs found that Brontosaurus was apparently the same as the genus Apatosaurus, and the rules of scientific nomenclature state that the oldest name has priority, dooming Brontosaurus to extinction as a valid name.

This decision was widely adopted, and for the next hundred years, museums and textbooks maintained that Brontosaurus did not exist as a unique dinosaur – even as toy shelves, cartoons, and movies kept the name alive for the public anyway. Then came a twist nobody saw coming.
