Instead of just suffering, he was eating poplar bark, which contains the pain-relieving compound salicylic acid – the active ingredient in aspirin – and researchers also detected a natural antibiotic mold, Penicillium. That’s self-medication with aspirin and penicillin, tens of thousands of years before either was “discovered.”
