A small flake of ochre found in Blombos Cave, South Africa, carries deliberate cross-hatched lines scratched roughly 73,000 years ago – currently one of the oldest known abstract drawings made by humans. It predates cave paintings in Europe by tens of thousands of years.

The pattern itself is disappointingly simple: a grid of crossing lines, nothing like the animal art that would come later. That simplicity is exactly what makes it puzzling. Was it a message, a counting system, a piece of body paint gone wrong, or genuinely meaningless scribbling?

Blombos Cave has also produced engraved ochre pieces and shell beads dating back around 100,000 years, suggesting symbolic behavior was already well established in early Homo sapiens populations in Africa long before similar behavior shows up in Europe.

In caves across Sulawesi, Indonesia, researchers have documented ochre hand stencils dating back at least 67,800 years – currently the oldest known rock art on the planet, roughly 1,100 years older than the Neanderthal-linked cave art found in Spain, and far older than anything at Lascaux.

What makes these stencils genuinely bizarre is the fingers. At some point the images were modified to create distinctive narrowed, almost claw-like fingers, and researchers have found similar imagery repeated across multiple sites. Researchers believe the artist deliberately manipulated their hand or the stencil itself to create the effect.

Even stranger, some stencils are simply missing fingers altogether. On the nearby island of Papua, some people express grief when a loved one dies by cutting off a finger, which has led researchers to wonder if the ancient stencils record the same painful ritual. One researcher even suggested the narrowed-finger images may have marked group identity, though that remains speculation.

None of this proves ritual mutilation – accidental injury and artistic style are equally possible explanations. But the repetition of the pattern across sites and centuries makes coincidence a hard sell.

Why merge human and animal forms at all? Modern interpretations point to shamanism, totemic belief systems, or an early concept of transformation between species. But the truth is nobody living today can ask the carver what they meant, and no written record exists to translate the symbolism.

Inside Bruniquel Cave in southwestern France, researchers discovered two large ring-like structures and several smaller piles built entirely from broken stalagmites, located 336 meters from the cave entrance. That’s roughly the length of three football fields, in total darkness, deep underground.

Dating placed the structures at an almost unbelievable age: approximately 176,500 years ago, tens of thousands of years before modern humans arrived in Europe. That means Neanderthals built them alone. Early modern humans wouldn’t reach Europe for another 130,000-plus years.

The construction required serious planning and manpower. Crafting those enormous stone rings – made from more than two tons of stalagmites – meant the cave’s occupants needed a reliable source of light, some kind of social organization, and the ability to conceive of and execute a shared design. Traces of fire were found on and around the structures, but that’s where the certainty ends – the actual function of the rings remains entirely conjectural.

Either way, the object’s precision keeps surprising anyone who assumes technological sophistication only arrived with modern humans.

But not everyone is convinced, and the pushback has been fierce. A separate team of archaeologists argued the evidence isn’t compelling enough to support deliberate burial or the claimed engravings. Other researchers proposed a far less dramatic explanation: periodic water seepage into the underground caves may have helped move partial or complete H. naledi corpses down sloping cave floors until they came to rest in natural depressions that only look like intentional graves.

Even skeptics admit the door isn’t fully closed. Some researchers say they’re not opposed to the idea that Rising Star witnessed early mortuary behavior involving the intentional disposal of bodies – they just think the latest claims need more evidence before the wider scientific community signs off. If confirmed, it would mean a species with a brain roughly a third the size of ours was capable of ritual, planning, and possibly even fire use – abilities long assumed to require a much bigger brain.
