In 1903, paleontologist Elmer Riggs decided Brontosaurus excelsus was so similar to Apatosaurus ajax that they had to be the same genus. Because Apatosaurus had been published first, naming rules forced Brontosaurus into retirement as a “junior synonym” – technically erased from science.
